Home Up Fire File Features Media Protector UL Testing Warranty Information

The UL Classification assures you of the level of protection necessary to safeguard documents in the event of a fire. KORDEN offers two levels of record protection equipment recognized by UL as both Fire Resistant and Fire and Impact Resistant.

The UL label is an assurance that the files interior temperature will not exceed 350° F while subjected to external temperatures of 1,700° F during a one hour period. Why can't the drawer temperature exceed 350° F? Quite simply, that's the temperature at which paper starts to burn.

To earn the UL Classification, sample files are subjected to the following tests:

Explosion Hazard Test:  A file is placed in a preheated 2,000° F furnace for 30 minutes to ensure gasses do not build up inside that may result in an explosion.

Fire Endurance Test:  A file is placed in a 1,700° F furnace for a one hour period while the interior temperature is monitored via thermocouples ensuring that interior temperatures do not exceed 350° F.

Fire & Impact Test:  (Only performed on files that carry the "Fire & Impact" rating). A file is placed in a furnace preheated to 1,550° F for one half hour. The file is then removed from the oven, raised 30 feet and dropped over a bed of rocks and rubble simulating the effects of collapsing floors and ceilings. If this isn't enough, the file is then inverted and reheated to 1,550° F for an additional half hour. Only after this abuse and constant monitoring of the files interior drawer temperature, ensuring it never reaches the 350° temperature, has a file successfully completed this test.

Only after successful completion of these extreme tests is UL Classification awarded!
